FreeTone is a VoIP app that gives you the ability to text and make calls through WiFi connection or existing data plan.

Even if you have unlimited texts and thousands of minutes on your phone plan, there are many different reasons why you might need multiple phone lines. In addition to creating a separate phone line for work-related contacts, you could also have a second number so that you don’t get spammed with unwanted texts and marketing calls. FreeTone is a simple VoIP app that gives you a second line with unlimited calls and texts in the United States and Canada.

This Android app only takes a few moments to set up, and you won’t have to input any credit card information unless you plan on upgrading your account. Once you have added your basic contact information, you will be assigned a new number for texts and calls. You are also going to be given a voicemail box, but that box has very limited space. With the free plan, you get a total of 500 outgoing minutes and unlimited incoming minutes. Unlimited texts are included in that plan as well, but texting images and video files is restricted.

One of the best features that this app has to offer is the ability to change your area code. When you are setting up your account, you can choose a specific area code or have a code assigned to you. That customization is a great option for business owners who want to use a local phone number when they contact their clients and customers. You can also create multiple accounts if you would like to have more than one number to work with. Unfortunately, signing in and out of accounts can be time-consuming, and you might want to use multiple devices if you are going to use two or more numbers.

The sound quality of your phone calls is going to depend on a few different factors including the strength of your wireless signal and the device that you are using. Making a call with an older smartphone that has a shoddy signal could result in echoing or lengthy delays. Luckily, most smartphones and tablets handle this software very well, and your calls should be quite clear as long as you have a solid wireless signal.

For the average user, the free version of this software should be completely adequate. That being said, you might want to upgrade to a paid account if you are going to use this app for business purposes or as your primary number. With an upgraded account, you can pay for the minutes as you use them or sign up for a monthly plan.

Pros:

  • Easy to set up
  • Unlimited texts
  • Choose your own area code

Cons:

  • No syncing between devices
  • Limited minutes with free plan
  • No calls outside of the United States and Canada
